Macey Center Exhibit features Bosque Dragonflies by Gary Froehlich
The Exhibit has been extended to April 6 - due to popular demand!
They're colorful. They're fascinating. They're irresistible. With close-focusing binoculars, they are easily viewed on Bosque del Apache's summertime marshes and ponds. Zoologists know them as Odonata. We ordinary folk call them dragonflies and damselflies, or simply dragons and damsels.
This description from an opening panel sets the stage for a month-long exhibit of photographs which opens Tuesday, March 3, on the mezzanine at New Mexico Tech's Macey Center . The exhibit, titled "Dragons & Damsels of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge" features photographs taken on the refuge by Gary Froehlich. More than 40 panels in the exhibit, ranging in size from 8" x 10" to 24" x 36" depict the beautiful patterns of these tiny creatures in intricate detail.

Gary Froehlich, an engineer at Sandia National Laboratories, has been photographing dragons and damsels, as well as birds, reptiles and nearly everything on the refuge that moves, for more than 20 years. His photos have appeared in books and magazines, and can be found in the current Eastern and Western volumes of the Stokes Field Guide to Birds, as well as some of the Stokes Beginner's Guides.
The exhibit at Macey provides a preview to summertime viewing opportunities, when some 35 species of Odonata frequent the marshes and water structures of the refuge. More than 400 species of dragons and damsels are found in North America, 6,500 species worldwide. Watching dragonflies, although not approaching the popularity of bird-watching, is a rapidly growing outdoor activity on the refuge and nationwide. Bosque's sister refuge, Bitter Lake NWR in eastern New Mexico, holds an annual Dragonfly Festival September 12-13.
The Dragons & Damsels exhibit was produced by John Bertrand for the Friends of the Bosque del Apache. Refreshments will be served on the mezzanine at a reception on Friday, Mar. 20, beginning at 5:30 p.m., preceding the Performing Arts Series Beoga & Grada Celtic double bill concert.
