NATURE STORE MANAGER
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Bosque Nature Store Manager will be responsible for operations
of the retail business operated by the Friends of the Bosque del Apache NWR
(“Friends”). The Store Manager, in cooperation with the Friends, Volunteers,
and Refuge staff, will adhere to the guidelines set forth for the Nature
Store in the Merchandising Decision Tool (attached; mod. April 2003); the
Memorandum of Understanding between the Friends and the Refuge; other Friends
directives approved by the Board; and as summarized below.
PURPOSE:
The Store Manager will oversee the operation of the Nature Store primarily
to enhance educational experiences of visitors to the Refuge, and secondarily
to provide revenue that can be used to assist the Refuge in its ecological
and educational activities.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
Inventory
Order, receive, and stock merchandise to maintain inventory appropriate to sales volume
Utilize the Merchandising Decision Tool and the input of the Merchandise
Committee in new purchases approval and inventory evaluations
Promote Refuge events and seasonal changes through purchasing and displays of relevant items
Communication
Report directly to the Friends Executive Director for all matters related
to the position, interrelations with the Refuge and/or volunteers, and updates
for the Friends Board
Provide a friendly and knowledgeable interaction with visitors, callers, and customers
Work cooperatively with volunteers and Refuge staff in daily store operations and scheduling
Work with the Merchandise Committee through monthly meetings to evaluate new inventory options
Management
Assist in the training of volunteers for store operations
Guide and provide support to volunteers in daily operations
Produce weekly deposits for release to the Executive Director
Process all mail received by the Friends, maintaining a log of all checks received
SECONDARY DUTIES:
Inventory
Streamline the current inventory to remove discontinued items and unused or incorrect entries
Evaluate the current inventory for stale, shelf-worn, or otherwise unsold items to be discounted or donated
Purchase food and drink items locally for sale in the visitor center
Actively solicit and promote local crafters and artists
Coordinate with the webmaster for the construction and ongoing management
of a limited, Refuge-specific selection of items available for sale through
the Friends website
Conduct monthly inventory evaluations and annual inventory counts
Communication
Produce articles for incorporation in the quarterly Friends newsletter
Provide agendas and record minutes for Merchandise Committee meetings
Provide support to Refuge Visitor Services staff in staffing the information desk and phones
Produce current reports on sales, new items, and other store issues for bi-monthly Friends Board meetings
Management
Manage Petty Cash and change bags accurately and in accordance with store needs and Friends policies
Maintain current procedure manuals
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Retail experience
Computer proficiency
Microsoft Office – Word, Excel
Quickbooks Point-of-Sale Systems
Knowledge of the Refuge and local area
REQUIREMENTS
Work a 40-hour work week, primarily during store hours (M-F 7:30-4:00; S-S
8:00-4:30) with the schedule to be mutually agreed to by the employee and
the Executive Director
Work special events that relate to the store, including but not limited to
the Annual Artists Reception and Festival of the Cranes
Attend weekly Refuge Staff meetings (Monday 7:00am)
Physically active with the ability to lift up to 40 lbs
Able to sit, stand, bend for various periods of time
SALARY
This position is salaried commensurate with education and experience.
The position allows for 2 weeks of paid vacation and 1 week of paid sick
leave per year of employment (with a cumulative total of 6 weeks).
Mileage will be reimbursed at the current Federal standard for store-related
trips to Albuquerque or other locations outside of the Socorro area.
Employee performance evaluations will be conducted by the Executive Director
at six and twelve months, and then annually thereafter. The appropriateness,
timing, and level of pay raises will be based on these performance evaluations.
