Crane Behavior (limit 14 participants, reservations required)

Sandhill Cranes are extraordinary birds with sophisticated vocal as well as body-language vocabulary and have recognizable patterns of communicating and interacting with each other. Join volunteer naturalist Robert Kruidenier as he introduces you to a world of cranes you never knew existed. Wear warm shoes and layered clothing.

Wildlife Digital Photography Workshop for Beginning and Intermediate Photographers (limit 15 participants, reservations required)

Jerry Goffe presents how to photograph wildlife followed by hands-on experience on the refuge. Learn techniques of photographing wildlife at sunset and sunrise , including use of telephoto, wide-angle and macro lenses. Bring a tripod, digital camera media, water and warm clothing.

Planets on Parade (limit 30 participants, reservations required)

Come to the refuge for an evening of planet watching and hands-on activities designed especially for children in grades 3-8 . Make a scale model of the inner solar system and learn why the Moon has phases. View four planets through sighting tubes, binoculars, and telescopes. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bring the family to this annual celebration of the brilliant red claret cup cacti and hummingbirds that feed on them in the Laura Jean Deal Desert Arboretum. The day will include presentations, tours, plant workshops, art projects for kids and cactus refreshments for all. Bring a lunch, water, and sun protection.

Beyond the Milky Way (limit 30 participants, reservations required)

In spring the Milky Way appears along Earth's horizon.  The Bosque's dark sky above provides an expansive porthole to the universe beyond our home galaxy.  Visitors of all ages will learn to use a star chart to find the circumpolar constellations and look through the porthole with binoculars and telescopes to view other galaxies!

Migratory Bird Day: Sounds of the Bosque (reservations required)

May is the height of the spring migration for neotropical migrants. Join refuge staff Daniel Perry for a 4-hour intensive tour looking and listening for these migrants. Bring binoculars, water and a snack. Older children accompanied by adults are welcome.

Boardwalk Trailhead

A Naturalist's Walk Along the Boardwalk Trail (reservations required)

Join naturalist Nancy Daniel for this easy one mile walk through three different habitats. In each we will see what thrives and why, how important these different plant communities are for wildlife and how they sustained our Native Americans and early settlers.

Canyon Trailhead

Tracking the Canyon Trail (reservations required)

This plant walk will be lead by native plant expert Nancy Daniel and will include a lot of natural and cultural history thrown in for good measure. The trail is an easy to moderate 2 ¼ miles with some sandy areas and changes in elevation which provides for an interesting and wide variety of vegetation.

Hummingbird Banding Workshop

Join Master Hummingbird Bander Joan Day-Martin for a close up view of hummingbirds as she processes them.  Learn about these creatures, listen to their tiny heart beats, and perhaps experience releasing one of them.  Following the banding session, Joan will present a slide program entitled “Banding New Mexico Hummingbirds” and give a few identification pointers to assist you in your own identification skills with this tiniest of avian species.

Wildflowers in Watercolor (limit 15 participants, reservations required)

Nan and Sid Simpson's workshop focuses on close observation of Bosque plants.  Participants will draw and paint a large variety of material including grasses, seedpods, flowers and leaves.  Formal instruction is from 9am-12pm; instructors will be available until 3pm for those who wish to continue their projects.  Please bring lunch if you plan to stay.  The class is suitable for adults and for older children as space permits.

Full Moon Over Bosque (limit 30 participants, reservations required)

Experience the sights and sounds of a summer night on a casual stroll across the Boardwalk. Amateur astronomers and naturalists will be on hand to share folklore of the Full Moon. All ages welcome; the Boardwalk is wheel chair accessible. Bring water and insect repellent.

Common Herps of Bosque del Apache

Join photographer and naturalist Gary Froehlich for a morning with the common reptiles and amphibians – or “herps” – of Bosque del Apache.  The workshop starts with a presentation on “herp” natural history, field identification tips, and a slide show.  In a field trip that follows, you'll locate, observe and identify many of the species covered; it will involve easy walking, and perhaps driving to different areas of the refuge, depending upon interest.

Plant Drawing Workshop (reservations required)

Botanist and plant illustrator Dorothy Hoard will introduce you to classical monochrome drawing techniques that are perfectly suited to drawing plants.  Bring your own Bristol board (90 pound hot pressed or equivalent), pencils (graphite HB or #2) and erasers (kneaded or plastic) or pens (felt tip waterproof – Micron 0.5 is good).
